One of the most-visited free attractions in England, the Millennium Gallery is Sheffield's premier destination for art, craft & design. The Gallery is the permanent home of Sheffield’s unique Metalwork Collection and Ruskin Collection, while also playing host to major touring exhibitions.
The largest urban glasshouse anywhere in Europe, Sheffield's Winter Garden is 70 metres long and 22 metres high (large enough to house 5000 domestic greenhouses) and home to more than 2500 plants from all around the world.
Converging in the heart of the city, in the regally and aptly named Tudor Square, Sheffield Theatres is a complex of three theatres, comprised of The Crucible, its more intimate Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse and the adjacent Lyceum Theatre. Together, along with the neighbouring Library Theatre, they form the largest theatre complex outside of London.
Situated close to the urban city centre, Sheffield Botanical Gardens were opened in 1836 and now cover 19 acres on a south-west sloping site. Listed by English Heritage as a Grade II site of special historic and architectural interest, there are over 18 different garden areas, based on geographical or botanical themes from across the world, with over 5500 species.
Once the beating heart of industry, Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites. The remains of the numerous cutlery and steel works, factories and workshops is part of what gives the area its distinct charm, except nowadays these buildings house everything from indie shopping arcades to microbreweries and galleries.
Sheffield Cathedral is the oldest building in the city, still in daily use. Formerly the Parish Church of Sheffield, it was granted Cathedral status in 1914 – however the history of Christianity on this site goes back over 1000 years. From its Norman bricks to its 60s tower, it is full of stories – stories that reflect the evolution of the city, its people and their place in history.
With 1/3 of Sheffield actually in the Peak District, Sheffield is the only major UK city with a national park within its boundary. It means we're a hub for all kinds of outdoor adventures and it's one of the main reasons we're known as The Outdoor City.
The UK's national cultural centre for videogames! Inside the iconic Castle House building, you'll find an interactive museum dedicated to exploring the culture, playfulness, design and people behind videogames. Come and play!
Fire your imagination in the world’s largest combined Emergency Services Museum! The museum is located in one of Yorkshire's first purpose-built combined Police, Fire and Ambulance Stations, dating back to 1898, with over 40 vehicles on display and three floors of exhibits.
